Real Earning Outcomes

You Can Tile as an Employee. Contracting Your Own Work Needs the Cert.

You can work as a tiler in Australia as an employee — fine under your employer’s licence. But to contract your own jobs above the state threshold ($5,000 NSW, $10,000 VIC, $3,300 QLD), charge per-square-metre on your own quotes, or win commercial fit-out work, you need CPC31320 and a state contractor licence.

Day-rate employee work has a ceiling. Per-m² contractor pricing, wet-area certification, and commercial tender access all require licensed hands.

Qualified Tiler (employed)

$80k–$95k / yr

Residential and commercial tiling under employer licence. Award-rate band once CPC31320 is current.

Commercial Tiler

$85k–$110k / yr

Fit-outs, strata, government contracts. Bigger jobs, more consistent work, better rates.

Tiling Foreman

$95k–$115k / yr

Quote jobs, run crews, coordinate with waterproofers and other trades. Senior role context.

Contracting Tiler / Subby

$120k–$170k+ / yr

Quote your own work. Required for contracting above state thresholds — and for most commercial tender.

Same trowel skill. Different pricing model.
